Classic Auto Mall 888-227-0914 1928 Whippet 2 DR Sedan Stock 785 VIN 96150238 Miles 2,952 Engine Size 134 CI Transmission Type 3 Speed Manual Exterior Color Green Interior Color Brown Description 1928 Whippet 2-Door Sedan
Built by the Willys-Overland Corporation of Toledo, Ohio, the Whippet was aptly named - it was small and swift. Introduced in 1926, it was America's smallest car, with a 100.25-inch wheelbase. Two engines were available, a four and a six. The Whippet was in production from 1927 until early 1931.
This 1928 Model has a 4-cylinder engine, and very low mileage. While the car sold well in 1928, the Great Depression would ultimately be the demise of this automobile. Not a whole lot of good examples of this model year are still around, so this can be considered somewhat rare. Overall very nice condition, a car not seen every day, let alone even the name is less familiar to today's public.
An older restoration has aged well, with some patina seen on the green over black color scheme. Surfaces are mostly blemish free, and present well. Running boards show vertical rubber ribs with Whippet metal foot inserts over the rubber. Chrome is in nice condition with correct badging and an original radiator cap. Wood spoked wheels, wide white sidewalls, and excellent tires are seen all around. A spare tire without the spoked insert resides on the rear bumper. A newer vinyl top and metal front windshield sunshade is seen, and all exterior lighting is present.
Wonderful mustard color mohair covers the 2 bucket seats up front, as well as the rear bench seat. Door panels are covered with contrasting tan corduroy. Black carpeting is seen in the front, and tan in the back. A laminate woodgrain dash holds a cluster of 3 gauges which are original to the car. Original wood steering wheel with 4 metal spokes and a center spark advance lever are seen on the driver's side. Headliner is felt and in good condition. A wiper motor and an original rear view mirror are above the windshield, which louvers out to provide ventilation
A good condition 4-cylinder 134ci engine with a single barrel carburetor, and oil bath air cleaner are under the folding hood. A 3-speed manual transmission is connected. The clutch is inoperable, and needs replaced. Solid axle semi elliptical springs are noted on the front and rear, as are drum brakes. An important note to this vehicle is the fuel tank and fuel system needs to be removed, drained, interior cleaned and sealed for this engine to run. A test with an auxiliary fuel tank showed engine running beautifully, so the fuel system on this car needs attention to drive the car.
A nice find for a 1928 Whippet, and despite fuel tank setback which consigner has priced the car accordingly, a very nice example. This car looks great, and will run beautifully, and has been shown to do so.
