eBay This has been my daily driver for more than 6 months. It gets about 45-50 mpg. I would not be afraid to drive it anywhere. It has never let me down or failed to start even when the weather got down to about 10F. It had a block heater but I never needed to use it. I changed all the coolant, heater and radiator hoses and didn't put it back in but I will include it if you want to. It goes into one of the radiator hoses.
I don't really know what the top speed is but I would guess about 85. It is very smooth and comfortable cruising at 70. No vibrations or shimmy and the steering does not pull. The steering wheel is centered and tires are wearing evenly.
There is very little rust and none where it would be problematic. No rust in the strut towers, floors, rocker panels or base of the windshield. There is some behind both rear wheels. The left is worse than the right. See pictures. Patch panels are available. The right front fender has no rust but the left has some. It is also dented from a fender bender and was banged out. It could be used as is or replacements are available new or used. There is also a small spot below the left rear quarter window and that's about it.
The drivers seat could use some upholstery but the passenger seat is good. I will install a cheap seat cover for the drivers seat to stop further deterioration. The rear seat is OK except for the top where it was exposed to the sun. The carpet is OK but not great. A few stains and some fading but no holes. The dash is good but I think it has been changed because the glove box doors and the rest of the interior is red.
The following items have been replaced in the last year:
All four struts, brakes, clutch, coolant and radiator hoses, air filter, steering column bearing, front end alignment, rear wheel bearings, left axle boots, starter, battery, front tires and rear half of exhaust and muffler. The front half is good. The rear tires have some tread but will need to be replaced before too long. Walmart has them for $37 each including mounting.
The alignment mechanic said there were no issues with the front end and the rear axle is straight.
New parts included are:
Two air filters, timing belt, valve cover gasket, oil baffle, AC dryer and expansion valve and two CV boots. I have a new fuel filter but I haven't found it. I will include it if I do. I'm also including a Haynes service manual.
It originally had a four speed transmission but now has a five speed out of a 1982 diesel Jetta. I will include the original four speed transmission and linkage.
More parts from the Jetta include:
Both axle shaft assemblies, starter, alternator, AC compressor, gauge cluster, left tail light assembly, clutch cable, block heater, vacuum pump and various relays.
The original diaphragm vacuum pump has been replaced with a rotary vane pump which is much more reliable.
It has AC but it doesn't work. I haven't tried to see what's wrong but all the parts are there and as I said I'm including an extra compressor, expansion valve and dryer.
There is a company near Detroit called The Parts Place that specialises in early VW diesels. They can supply any part that you might need. I can give you one of their catalogs.
It is currently tagged and insured. You are welcome to come here and test drive it before you bid.
$200 deposit by paypal within 48 hours. The rest in person. Cash, money order or certified cashiers check from a US or Canadian bank.
The auction will not end early.
If you want to fly or bus in and drive it home I can pick you up at the airport or station. You will need to bring your own tag and arrange for insurance if you do. Check your local laws.
I can store it for you indoors if you can't pick it up right away. If you decide to have it shipped I will will work with any shipping company that you pick. I have room for a big truck to park off the street while loading.
Ask if you have any questions.
Thanks for looking.
On Mar-21-19 at 15:50:00 PDT, seller added the following information:For some reason the title check is indicating a minor problem with the title and I'm not sure why. I have posted pictures of the front and back of the clear title. The car has no lien nor has the title been branded as salvage, rebuilt totaled or anything else. The title check shows that it has never been reported as having been in a wreck. I have been all over the car and I can assure you that it has never been in an accident except for the minor fender bender that I mentioned. My only explanation is that in Kansas cars of this age are exempt from mileage requirements and so the actual miles can not be confirmed.
Again, please ask if you have any questions.
ThanksOn Mar-21-19 at 17:28:27 PDT, seller added the following information:Oops. After posting pictures of the title I see that it's an 82, not an 81. I doubt that this will make a difference to anyone but I wanted to let you know.
Sorry about that.On Mar-22-19 at 07:05:03 PDT, seller added the following information:The auction has no reserve and there is no buy it now price.
