This rock solid, completely rust free, no body filler, no bubbling, never been hit vehicle lived its entire life in Sacramento California until December of 2014. I purchased the vehicle from the second owner and had it shipped to me in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The engine arrived with all the original smog and emissions equipment installed. The engine was immediately removed in order to perform the work illustrated below. (I have all of the original emissions equipment and it goes with the sale of the vehicle.)
Stock, 360 cubic engine, numbers matching original to car; block was stripped down completely by St. Claire Engines then hot tanked, magna-fluxed, main cap saddles line bored & checked, bored 0.40 over (no sleeves) with torque plates, parallel surface decked, new cam bearings installed, new oil gallery & brass expansion plugs installed, new ARP main studs installed. Engine now over 400 cubic engines.
Block then hand washed, painted, and assembled professionally by Jakes Automotive Performance and Dyno Testing using the following parts:
KB-356 0.40 over hypereutectic 9.5 to 1 compression Pistons, sealed power plasma moly piston rings, eagle 4.0 stroke internal balance cast iron crank (rated up to 600+ hp) eagle I beam (SIR series) bronze bushed connecting rods with ARP rod bolts, king 0.10 under rod & 0.10 under main bearings, billet adjustable roller rockers with new shafts, bolts & hold downs, push rods and ARP bolts. Complete rotating assembly bob weighted and fully balanced within 1/2 gram. 308 casting cylinder heads were stripped down, hot tanked, magna-fluxed, pocket ported, bowl blended, short side radius relieved, gasket matched, surfaced, new guides installed, intake & exhaust seats ground, new 2.02/1.60 AFR Ferrea titanium valves installed, new comp cams valve springs, locks, moly retainers & valve seals installed. (These heads flow enough air to make 500+ hp.) Heads were installed using new ARP head bolts. Mopar Performance Purple Camshaft: comp 274/286 duration 488/491 lift on 110 lobe center cam, lifters & new double roller timing chain package installed. Melling high volume oil pump, pick up & Milodon windage tray installed. Intake manifold is Edelbrock Performer dual plane. Mopar timing cover, harmonic balancer. Custom powder coated Mopar Performance valve covers, powder coated fan in same color & new oil pan with new dipstick, new t-stat & housing, new Holley hi volume mechanical fuel pump and new water pump with new by-pass hose, new (not re-built) Holley 770 Avenger carb with vacuum secondary/electric choke, in-line fuel pressure gauge with Lokar Hi-Tech throttle and kick down linkage kit. Full MSD ignition system (8534 distributor, 8 mm wires, new 6al box & blaster 2 coil.) Mopar performance air cleaner. Ceramic coated hooker headers, 2.5” dual exhaust with Flow Master stainless mufflers and chrome tips. New motor mounts. New custom aluminum radiator by Four Seasons Radiator, car never gets over 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Car starts on the first crank every time with high torque mini starter.
Engine has a mild rumble, very throaty but not excessively loud. Perfect exhaust note that doesn’t give away what is under the hood. This is a sneaky sleeper, runs on high octane pump gas with Brad Penn Pennsylvania crude (10W30 oil), never anything less.
Motor is mated to a completely rebuilt 727 torque flite auto transmission with new 2500 stall converter, balanced flex plate, shift kit with Milodon braided stainless dipstick and Trick Flow vented aluminum extra capacity trans pan. Custom drive shaft by Drive Line Performance with new yoke and heavy duty universal joints. Completely re-done rear end by DTS (Drive Train Specialists) is the stock 8 ¼” housing with a brand new 3.5.5 Posi unit (Mopar, not aftermarket gears) sporting all new bearings and heavy duty axles.
Wheel Vintiques 15” X 7” satin black powder coated rims in front, 15” X 8” in the rear all sporting the period correct “dog dish” center caps, all wrapped in Cooper Cobra white letter radials with same mileage as drive train. New upper and lower control arm bushings with complete front end inspection done prior to motor install. Wheels and tires held on with heavy duty studs and lugs from Summit Racing. Stops with a 4 wheel stock brake system (drums rear, disc front) that works perfectly with new master cylinder and brake lines. New everything; power steering box, power steering pump, reservoir and hoses along with 4 wheel alignment performed prior to car being dyno tested.
All work done professionally, no expenses spared, all work completed by top performance professionals using the best available parts. The entire drive train above has less than 1000 miles on it and I have the dated receipts to prove it totaling over $15K, and that doesn’t include the purchase price/value of the rolling chassis.
Car drives straight, very fast, sounds excellent and stops as it should. Absolutely turn-key and built to be a low maintenance street rod. NEVER, ever raced. Not offensively loud to the neighbors, not expensive to maintain and certainly not expensive to insure.
Car was an original air conditioned car. I have all the OEM air conditioning hardware (including double pulleys that were also powder coated black) and the car can be returned to an A/C vehicle with a few hours work. Deliberately used the Edelbrock Performer intake for clearance purposes to allow this.
Magnums were only produced in 1978 and 1979 thus very rare. Parts however are readily available because they shared a great many parts with its predecessor the Charger as well as Chrysler’s Cordoba. A rare car with parts readily available, truly the best of both worlds! This was the last of the B-Bodies made by Dodge. Raced in the Nascar circuit by Richard Petty, these cars have a cult following and are gaining in value. You simply don’t find them this solid very often. This is a collector car waiting to gain respect…and it will. With it being a low production vehicle, this is a sound investment vehicle in spectacular shape. Tastefully updated, but not cut or molested and numbers matching. Everything is there to enjoy as is, return to stock or take it to the next level in performance. A truly affordable, unique hot rod with a great stance… this Mopar is a real head turner and always gathers a crowd at local car shows and cruises.
