This auction is for a 1968 Buick Riviera. I bought it from an elderly person’s estate where it had been sitting since 1986 (based on the license plate in the trunk). For whatever it’s worth, the odometer reads 44K. It has the 430 4bbl and an AT. It also has Power Steering, Power Brakes, Air Conditioning, and even Cruise Control. Yes, Cruise Control! It is an aftermarket unit that was installed back in the day. One other neat thing is someone installed an auxiliary brake controller on the pedal to assist when pulling a trailer. I thought it was period correct and kind of cool, so I left it alone. The hitch has been removed, but the trailer wiring is still in the trunk, so I left that alone too.
After I got the car home, I drained the gas tank and put in fresh fuel. I installed brand new AC spark plugs, new wires, cap, rotor, points and condenser. I hooked up the battery from my trailer winch, poured some gas in the carb, turned the key, and it lit right up! The right side of the exhaust had been broken off, so it was hard to hear everything clearly, but it seemed to run pretty good. I crudely wired on an old straight through muffler I had laying around (and used some good old muffler tape) to quiet it down some. Obviously, the exhaust will need to be replaced, but at least it sounds a little more like a drag car now than a farm tractor.
As this car had been sitting since the 80’s, the master cylinder was bone dry and the brake pedal was rock hard. I installed a brand new master cylinder, so now the car is yard drivable. I wouldn’t take it on a family vacation just yet, but it can be moved around under its own power. Speaking of moving it around, the tires that were on it were all dry rotted and three of them wouldn’t hold air at all. So, I had some whitewalls mounted up and even did the spare. Again, they’re not cross country ready, but they’ll work until the new owner decides what kind of look he/she wants.
One of the highlights is this car has mostly original paint on it. That means very little is hidden. From what I can tell, the passenger quarter panel has been worked on and, obviously, will need to be worked on again as there is damage on the top and some rust on the bottom. I think the paint on the rest of the car is original. The driver quarter needs some work on the bottom and the trunk floor has rust on both sides. The rest of the car looks pretty solid. I tried to take pictures of the bad parts, so there aren’t any surprises.
In addition to what I’ve already mentioned, the tranny has a significant leak (which is most likely why it was parked in the 80’s), there is a crack in the windshield, the vacuum headlights don’t work, and the driver’s side of the front seat bottom is cracked. On the plus side, if you’re in Minnesota, the plates are current until August 2018. Check out the pictures because what you see is what you get!
The Iowa family I bought it from said it was originally out of North Dakota which is why it’s not all rotted out. There is a CLEAN and CLEAR title for the Riviera registered in my name, it runs, it drives, it stops, it’s complete, it’s solid, it has a decent interior, it hasn’t been messed with, and it’s just plain cool. It’s nowhere near a perfect car, but it’s a perfect project car and you know how much these cars are worth when they’re done!
